HISTORY
There are many well preserved historical monuments in the vicinity of Marina, uncovering the inhabitance and development of the area from Stone Age to present day.
KAŠTELA
People have lived in the area of Kaštela since the Old Stone Age, as is confirmed by old stone artifacts 50 000 years old. The particular feature of the City of Kaštela is that it has developed around 7 separate settlements: Kaštel Sućurac, Kaštel Gomilica, Kaštel Kambelovac, Kaštel Lukšić, Kaštel Stari, Kaštel Novi, Kaštel Štafilić. The names and shapes of Kaštela were defined by fortresses Kaštels, built by the locals between 13th and 15th century to defend themselves from Venetians and Turks.
The town of Kaštel Gomilica is situated just a few hundred meters from the Marina. It was built by nuns from Split in the first half of 16th century. The entrance to the kastel is still protected by a tall tower. Right next to it you will find the church of St. Kuzma and Damjan, built in 12th century on the foundations of an old-Christian church.
A walk by the sea will take you from Kaštel Gomilica to Kaštel Kambelovac, where you can see a cylindrical kastel built by brothers Cambi in 1517.
Further on, in Kaštel Lukšic, you will find Rušinac, a kastel built on sea rocks, and castle Vitturi , a luxurious renaissance palace. These two are connected to a legend of a young couple, Miljenko and Dobrila, and their tragic love story. The resemblance to Shakespeare's drama is the reason they are often referred to as the Romeo and Juliet of Kaštela. Today the renovated castle Vitturi is the home of Museum of Kaštela, the Tourist association of Kaštela, and hosts many exhibitions, concerts, theatre plays etc.
If you go to the other direction, from the Marina to Split, you will soon be in Kastel Sućurac, with remains of a defence tower from 1392. It was built by the archbishop of Split A. Gvaldo, in order to protect the villagers of Putalj, a small village on the side of Kozjak. In the oldest parts of Sućurac today there is an exhibit room with archeological findings from Putalj.
These are just some of buildings and sights worth visiting in the vicinity of Marina. To read more, please visit the pages of Tourist board of Kaštela.
KAŠTELA Surroundings
Not far from Marina Kaštela are the ruins of Salona, an ancient metropolis in the Roman province of Dalmatia. You could make the best out of the beautiful weather and go for a walk through the remains of temples, roman baths, and theaters. Do not miss the amphitheater that dates back to the second half of 2nd century AD with a capacity for 19,000 people, where gladiator fights took place.
It is worth seeing the Klis fortress, which in the 9th century was the seat of Croatian counts and kings. The fortress is about a 10 min drive from Marina Kaštela. You can read more about Klis here.
And finally, don't forget that Marina Kaštela is about half an hour driving away from Split, the second biggest city in Croatia. As the capital of the County, and with its 1700 years of history, Split offers numerous opportunities to explore and enjoy its rich culture, traditions and vibrant present.
